Inside Jorja Johnson’s fashion game

Though many recognize Jorja Johnson for her stellar mixed game alongside her brother JW, I know her best for her impeccable fashion.

Johnson is a player raising the bar on pickleball style. From experimenting with new looks to consistently landing on the Best Dressed List, it’s clear she takes the fashion game seriously.

“I wear a lot of thrifted Lululemon when I play pickleball. I don’t go to actual thrift stores because I’m on the road so much, but I go on Poshmark, Etsy, any of those second-hand places to shop. I literally have all the apps and I’m constantly shopping,” shared Johnson.

“Recently, I found a mock-neck, long-sleeve cropped top that’s probably one of my favorite things to play in. Lululemon stopped making it, so I immediately went online and I was able to find some more in different colors on Poshmark.”

At just 19, Johnson’s love for second-hand shopping mirrors a wider Gen Z trend—embracing thrifted fashion for its affordability, individuality, sustainability, and the chance to craft a truly unique style.

What is Johnson looking for when she shops online?

“It has to be functional. That’s the main thing. It’s got to be made out of good material, which is why I like Lululemon, because the quality is amazing,” she explained. “It also has to fit right and fully cover everything. I’ve also learned to be careful with white because it can be see-through, so I try not to order much in white, just in case. And of course it has to be cute.”

What’s fascinating about Johnson’s on-court fashion is her remarkably diverse aesthetic. In the same tournament, she might wear an ultra-feminine ballerina-pink look for women’s play and switch to an edgy all-black ensemble for mixed.

So how does Johnson describe her own style?

“Honestly, it’s really based on how I’m feeling that day and what works for my partner and I,” she confirmed. “I’m at the point with JW that I can get him to wear tie-dye or zebra and he’ll go with it.”

But with her women’s partners, most often Hurricane Tyra Black, Johnson says the outfit choice becomes a more collaborative decision.

“Tyra and I are constantly shopping and sending each other links to stuff we see or ads that show up on our feeds. Anytime something new comes out from one of our favorite websites, we’re immediately looking to see if it’ll work for both of us,” she stated. “Tyra likes more cropped things than I do, and there’s certain shades she doesn’t like, but I do. We make it work.”

So, what makes a great pickleball outfit in Johnson’s eyes?

“The coordination. My shoes don’t match anything, but I love when the socks match the hat or the skirt matches the shoes,” she mentioend. “It’s even better when you can coordinate with your partner.”
