Pickleball stars enjoy Alex Ovechkin's road to history in Raleigh
Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin tied Wayne Gretzky atop the NHL goals list on Friday night at Capital One Arena with the 893rd and 894th goals of his illustrious career.
Gretzky was in the building to see Ovechkin match his mark in front of the Capitals' faithful.
"The Great One" held sole possession of the league's all-time goals record since March 23, 1994 when he scored his 802nd career goal and surpassed "Mr. Hockey" Gordie Howe in the process.
Earlier in the week, a group of UPA Tour pros were a part of Ovechkin's road to history by witnessing his 892nd tally as the Carolina Hurricanes hosted the Capitals at Lenovo Center in Raleigh.
Jack Sock, Federico Staksrud, Hayden Patriquin, Roscoe Bellamy, Parris Todd, Hunter Johnson, Yates Johnson, Riley Newman, Lindsey Newman, Eric Roddy, Brandon French, Wyatt Stone, and Luke Wasson were among the attendees.
Pickleball's top athletes are in town in conjunction with the Veolia North Carolina Open, which runs through Sunday at Cary Tennis Park.
Ovechkin's first opportunity to surpass Gretzky actually comes on Championship Sunday as the Capitals visit the New York Islanders at UBS Arena.
The 13-time NHL All-Star is riding a four-game goal streak, so he's primed to light the lamp again and reach the top of the mountain in the Empire State.
