3 things to watch for on Wednesday at PPA Mesa
The Carvana Mesa Cup continues Wednesday with Round of 32 action in all five pro events.
Here is the day’s order of play:
Now, let’s get into what to watch for.
- In men’s singles, No. 5 seed Connor Garnett and No. 35 seed Connor Mogle will face off for the second consecutive week. Mogle pulled off an 11-9, 1-11, 13-11 upset at last week’s event in Cape Coral, so Garnett will be looking to avenge that loss on Wednesday with a spot in the Round of 16 on the line. This will be the second match of the day on Grandstand Court.
- Qualifier Matthew Barlow had a pair of strong performances on Tuesday to make the Round of 32 in both men’s singles and men’s doubles. He upset No. 6 seed Roscoe Bellamy in singles before teaming up with Cameron Luhring to take down No. 13 seeds Riley Newman/Will Mackinnon in men’s doubles. Barlow will look to keep it going in both events on Wednesday when he faces No. 30 seed Mota Alhouni in singles before he and Luhring face No. 24 seeds Zane Ford/Juan Benitez in doubles.
- In mixed doubles, No. 13 seeds Lea Jansen/Dylan Frazier will take on No. 17 seeds Callie Smith/Hunter Johnson in what projects to be a particularly high-quality Round of 32 clash. There’s added intrigue, of course, since Jansen and Smith will also compete in women’s doubles together later in the day. This will be the fifth match on Showcase Court 4.
Live broadcast coverage from the Arizona Athletic Grounds will begin at 11am CT on Pickleballtv.
