Parenteau and Rohrabacher, Waters and Bright surge into women’s double final
Catherine Parenteau/Rachel Rohrabacher are into the women’s doubles final after an 11-9, 11-6 victory over No. 9 seeds Kate Fahey/Tina Pisnik.
The top seeds—playing together for the first time this week—came out on fire and built up a 9-1 lead in the opening game.
They nearly suffered a complete collapse when Fahey/Pisnik got it to 9-9, but Parenteau/Rohrabacher were able to eventually close out the first game.
That success continued into the second game, where Parenteau/Rohrabacher built a 7-2 lead that helped them eventually claim the victory in straight games.
“I think we were just really doing a great job of trusting each other,” Rohrabacher said of the performance. “Even when we were losing some points, I felt like we were doing the right things. So, it was really about trusting and being confident and being positive. I think we just need to clean up some unforced errors and continue to trust our shots going into Sunday.”
Parenteau/Rohrabacher will face either Anna Leigh Waters/Anna Bright or Tyra Black/Parris Todd in the final.
In the second semifinal, Anna Leigh Waters/Anna Bright defeated No. 3 seeds Tyra Black/Parris Todd by an 11-2, 11-7 score line.
It was a straightforward win over an accomplished opponent for the No. 2 seeds, apart from the fact that it took eight tries to close out the contest.
“Parris and Tyra are an amazing team, so we knew it was going to be a dogfight,” Bright said after the fact. “We knew they were going to bounce back after Game 1, and they definitely caught fire there for a little bit in the second. I felt like we were playing good points—we just had to play to win there at the end to get over the finish line.”
Saturday’s results set up a tantalizing Championship Sunday matchup for women’s doubles gold.
