Shock end Utah trip with DreamBreaker win over Sliders
KAYSVILLE, UT - The St. Louis Shock (Anna Bright, Hayden Patriquin, Gabriel Tardio, Kate Fahey) ended their time in Utah with a DreamBreaker victory over the Columbus Sliders (Riley Newman, Meghan Dizon, Jay Devilliers, Andrea Koop) early Sunday evening.
Dizon and Dizon got Columbus on the board first in women’s doubles, snagging their first victory as a partnership.
Patriquin and Tardio responded admirably for St. Louis and took the men’s doubles point to even the match. The squads would then go on to split the mixed doubles matches to bring on the deciding contest.
Columbus—not a particularly strong singles team on paper—veered away from the traditional DreamBreaker lineup order of two male players followed by two female players.
The Sliders instead went with the order of Koop, Devilliers, Dizon, and Newman. That moved succeeded in keeping the DreamBreaker as close as it could be, with nearly every rotation going 2-2.
The single rotation that didn’t end in a stalemate was the second bout between Koop and Patriquin, which Patriquin took 3-1. That slight advantage proved to be the difference in the match, as St. Louis never squandered that lead en route to a 21-18 triumph.
This win caps a 4-2 weekend for the Shock, who are averaging the second-most standings points per match at the Premier level, behind only the Dallas Flash.
Team captain and No. 3 overall draft pick Anna Bright likes where the team is at now, but she knows that there will be more to play for in the coming months.
“I think we’re really happy so far,” she said. “We’re still right at the top of the standings, which is where we want to be. We’ve played most of our regular season matches now, so we’re in a good spot and really excited for what’s to come with the playoffs at the end of the year.”
Both St. Louis and Columbus will be back in action at MLP Kansas City, set to run Aug. 3-5.
