'Top seed slayers' Glozman, Patriquin continue run with three-game triumph
SAN CLEMENTE, CA - Vivian Glozman and Hayden Patriquin are through to the mixed doubles semifinals in southern California after a thrilling 11-8, 6-11, 11-9 victory over No. 5 seeds Lea Jansen and Riley Newman.
This is the second marquee victory in as many days for the No. 16 seeds after they shocked No. 2 seeds Anna Bright and James Ignatowich 11-6, 11-4 in Thursday’s Round of 16.
It initially looked like Friday’s match might be a different story when Jansen and Newman grabbed a 5-0 lead in the first game, but Glozman and Patriquin clawed their way back to steal Game 1.
The veteran duo of Jansen and Newman would not be denied in the second game, however, and took it convincingly to even up the match.
Game 3 itself was a game of runs, as Glozman and Patriquin built up leads of 5-2 and 9-6 before their opponents proceeded to close the gap each time.
Despite their opponents’ resilience in the closing stages, Glozman and Patriquin closed out the match thanks to a crisp backhand counter winner from Glozman on match point.
She credits Patriquin for his play in the final game’s tight moments.
“Hayden is a beast out there, and he never falters when it gets close,” the former University of California tennis player said of her partner.
Having success at Life Time Rancho San Clemente is especially meaningful for Patriquin, who grew up in the area.
“This is basically my hometown, so I’m glad to be winning here,” he shared.
The ‘Top Seed Slayers’ (as Hannah Johns called them on the broadcast) will next face No. 7 seeds Catherine Parenteau and Christian Alshon, who beat Tina Pisnik and Dekel Bar to advance.
