Waters and Johns, Johnson siblings set to clash for mixed doubles crown
Anna Leigh Waters/Ben Johns and Jorja Johnson/JW Johnson, the top two seeds in the mixed doubles draw, advanced to the finals with three-game victories on Saturday afternoon.
For the second tournament in a row, Waters/Johns outdueled No. 3 seeds Anna Bright/Hayden Patriquin in three games, this time winning by an 11-6, 12-14, 11-5 score line.
Bright/Patriquin seemed to have the momentum going into the decider after saving two match points in Game 2, but Waters/Johns regrouped in the third to ultimately triumph in one of the day’s most entertaining matches.

Johns played especially well down the stretch, as he applied near-constant pressure in extended rallies at the kitchen line.
“It’s always on my mind to take a lot of court, especially against that team since Hayden does the same thing,” he explained afterwards. “You want to meet pressure with pressure, so especially in Game 3, I felt like my whole MO there was to take a lot of court.”
In the second semifinal, No. 2 seeds Jorja Johnson/JW Johnson triumphed over No. 4 seeds Tyra Black/Christian Alshon 9-11, 11-5, 11-6.
The siblings and Dallas Flash teammates got down 0-5 in the opening game, but they fought all the way back to get to 9-9 before eventually falling.
Jorja spoke afterwards about how important it was to make things competitive in Game 1.
“We had a little bit of a slow start in Game 1, but we were really proud of the way that we came back and brought it to 9-9,” she noted. “We didn’t end up closing it out, but we were super happy with that effort and felt like we had the momentum going into the second game, and it carried over into the third.”
These results set the stage for the year’s sixth Championship Sunday meeting between Waters/Johns and Johnson/Johnson.
Waters/Johns have won four of those contests, with the Johnsons’ lone win coming in an epic five-game final in North Carolina back in April.
