Johns, Staksrud headline first-time partnerships at Veolia Arizona Open
The 2026-2027 PPA Tour season continues this week with the Veolia Arizona Open, the second event of the campaign worth 1000 points.
With some top players not competing in the desert—namely Anna Bright, Jorja Johnson, Gabe Tardio, Hayden Patriquin, and JW Johnson—fans will have an opportunity to see some first-time partnerships take the courts at the Arizona Athletic Grounds.
Here are (some of) those first-time partnerships.
MIXED DOUBLES
No. 7 Catherine Parenteau/Jonathan Truong
No. 14 Jamie Wei/CJ Klinger
- Wei and Klinger were actually supposed to play their first event together two weeks ago at the season-opening event in North Carolina, but Wei had to withdraw due to an injury. Wei is coming off a promising rookie MLP campaign that saw her help lead the Chicago Slice to the playoffs and should be primed to do some damage alongside the lefty Klinger.
No. 15 Brooke Buckner/Dylan Frazier
No. 22 Etta Tuionetoa/Will Howells
No. 25 Meghan Dizon/John Lucian Goins
WOMEN’S DOUBLES
No. 2 Hurricane Tyra Black/Meghan Dizon
- With both Black and Dizon standing at 5-foot-8, this first-time partnership brings a lot of reach and will be tough to drop against. In a wide-open women’s doubles draw, Dizon will look to reach her first PPA final in the U.S. since 2024.
MEN’S DOUBLES
No. 1 Ben Johns/Federico Staksrud
- After spending the entire 2023, 2024, and 2025 seasons playing the left side, Staksrud has returned to the right in 2026 in his partnerships with Andrei Daescu and Hayden Patriquin. That should continue alongside Johns, and the top seeds should produce some must-see pickleball in the desert.
No. 11 Jonathan Truong/Max Freeman
No. 12 Will Howells/Pablo Tellez
No. 21 Rafa Hewett/Clayton Powell
Main draw action begins Tuesday at 2pm MST, with live coverage available on Pickleballtv and the PPA Streamed Courts YouTube channel.
