3 things to watch for on Thursday at PPA Virginia Beach
The Fasenra Virginia Beach Cup presented by JOOLA continues Thursday with Round of 16 action in all five pro events.
The mixed doubles quarterfinals will also be played in the afternoon in an attempt to get ahead of expected rain coming to the area in the coming days.
Here is the order of play:

Now, let’s get into what to watch for.
- One of the day’s best matchups projects to be No. 8 seeds Catherine Parenteau/Riley Newman taking on No. 9 seeds Jackie Kawamoto/Federico Staksrud in mixed doubles. Parenteau/Newman have medaled in 16 tournaments together and made a final in Las Vegas in 2024, while Kawamoto/Staksrud are playing their first tournament together this week. All four players should also have plenty of familiarity with each other’s games, since Kawamoto and Newman play together for the Brooklyn Pickleball Team, while Staksrud and Parenteau made the final of the PPA Masters earlier this year. Don’t be surprised if this one goes three games.
- Sticking with mixed doubles, Andrea Koop/Daniel de la Rosa are through to the Round of 16 after upset victories on Tuesday and Wednesday. The No. 44 seeds beat the pairings of Lea Jansen/Max Freeman and Meghan Dizon/Jaume Martinez Vich and will now face No. 2 seeds Jorja Johnson/JW Johnson. The D.C. Pickleball Team teammates will look to pull off another upset on Thursday with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.
- In men’s doubles, No. 24 seeds Jonathan Truong/Tam Trinh will look to continue their run after a three-game victory over No. 9 seeds Riley Newman/Pat Smith on Wednesday. They will face another veteran team in Jay Devilliers/Matt Wright, who survived in three games against Cason Campbell/Adam Harvey.
