What to watch for on Friday at the DoorDash MLP Finals
The Major League Pickleball postseason continues Friday with day 1 of the DoorDash MLP Finals-New York City, powered by Toray, where both Premier level semifinal series will begin at CityPickle in Central Park.
Each semifinal and final will be played as a best two-out-of-three-match series. Here are the two matchups that will begin on Friday.
Now, let’s get into what to watch for.
- Premier SF 1: No. 1 St. Louis Shock v. No. 5 Columbus Sliders: Women’s doubles will pit the Shock’s Anna Bright/Kate Fahey against Lea Jansen/Parris Todd for Columbus. This is an intriguing matchup because these pairings split their regular season matchups, with Jansen/Todd prevailing in their most recent meeting at MLP ST. Louis by an 11-3 score line. In mixed doubles, St. Louis chose to send out Fahey/Gabe Tardio against Todd/Andrei Daescu. Fahey/Tardio dominated this matchup 11-2 back in May at MLP Columbus, but Todd/Daescu are coming off a quarterfinal series against the Dallas Flash where they beat Jorja Johnson/JW Johnson (27-2 in the regular season) in two out of three games. In a DreamBreaker scenario, Bright would face off against Jansen in the No. 4 slot. Bright prevailed in a 7-11, 11-4, 11-9 thriller when they faced earlier this month at PPA Bristol, so she’ll be looking to replicate that success on Friday, if needed.
- Premier SF 2: No. 3 New Jersey 5s v. No. 6 Los Angeles Mad Drops: For the second time this season, we will see Anna Leigh Waters (NJ) face off against Ben Johns (LA) in mixed doubles. We also saw this in the teams’ most recent meeting at MLP Dallas, where Waters/Will Howells took down Catherine Parenteau/Johns 11-4 before New Jersey prevailed in a DreamBreaker. Speaking of DreamBreakers, both teams have made changes to their singles lineups ahead of Friday’s clash. The 5s will have Noe Khlif play against Hunter Johnson, instead of Howells. Johnson outscored Howells 9-3 in Dallas, so the move makes sense for the 5s. The Mad Drops, on the other hand, are moving Jade Kawamoto up to the top singles spot to face Waters in place of Parenteau. The idea here is that points against Waters will be hard to come by for both players, but Parenteau has a better chance of outscoring Meghan Dizon in the No. 4 slot to try and make up some ground. The numbers from the last DreamBreaker support this notion, with Parenteau going 1-9 against Waters and Kawamoto going 4-4 again Dizon. We’ll see if it pays off the LA this weekend.
Action begins at 11:30am ET on Pickleballtv.
