3 things to watch for on Friday at PPA Mesa
The Carvana Mesa Cup continues Friday with quarterfinal action in all five pro events.
Here is the order of play:
Now, let’s get into what to watch for.
- The day’s biggest news is that Genie Bouchard has withdrawn ahead of her women’s singles quarterfinal matchup against No. 2 seed Kate Fahey. This would have been a rematch of last week’s quarterfinal in Cape Coral, a contest that Bouchard won by a 6-11, 11-7, 11-5 score line. As a result of the withdrawal, Fahey will advance to Saturday’s semifinal round where she will face either No. 4 seed Brooke Buckner or No. 11 seed Mary Brascia. Elsewhere in women’s singles, No. 18 seed Kiora Kunimoto is into the quarterfinals after an impressive 11-6, 11-4 victory over No. 6 seed Catherine Parenteau on Friday. That win sets up a tantalizing quarterfinal bout against top-seeded Anna Leigh Waters.
- In mixed doubles, No. 24 seed Lacy Schneemann/Jack Sock should have no shortage of confidence after knocking off No. 2 seeds and defending Mesa Cup champions Jorja Johnson/JW Johnson 11-6, 11-6 on Thursday. The first-time partners will look to keep it going when they face No. 9 seeds Tina Pisnik/Noe Khlif with a spot in the semifinals on the line.
- And in women’s doubles, No. 20 seeds Genie Erokhina/Judit Castillo are into the quarterfinals after a stunning 11-7, 4-11, 11-8 victory over No. 3 seeds Catherine Parenteau/Rachel Rohrabacher on Thursday. Now, No. 8 seeds Chao Yi Wang/Brooke Buckner stand in the way of both players advancing to their first doubles semifinals on the PPA Tour.
