6:15pm MDT: Mixed doubles semifinal matchups set
Here are the two semifinal matchups in mixed doubles that will be played on Saturday:
- No. 1 Jorja Johnson/JW Johnson v. No. 6 Parris Todd/Dekel Bar
- No. 2 Catherine Parenteau/Christian Alshon v. No. 4 Tyra Black/James Ignatowich
6:10pm MDT: Parenteau and Alshon, Black and Ignatowich set semifinal clash with clinical performances
The pairings of Catherine Parenteau/Christian Alshon and Tyra Black/James Ignatowich closed out Thursday’s action at Little Valley Sports Complex with impressive straight-game victories to advance to the mixed doubles semifinals.
Parenteau/Alshon did so with an 11-1, 11-5 victory over No. 8 seeds Meghan Dizon/Andrei Daescu, while Black/Ignatowich followed suit with an 11-3, 11-3 triumph over No. 5 seeds Rachel Rohrabacher/Hayden Patriquin.
Though both performances were some of the best of the day in St. George, Ignatowich was especially dominant.
The 24-year-old spoke of the challenges he’s faced with injuries throughout the past several months.
“I think one of the biggest things is just being healthy,” he said. “I’m just super grateful to be feeling good. I think you’ll always play better if your body feels good, and I was kind of playing through pain for almost six months.”
He also, of course, applauded Black for her role in Thursday’s triumph.
“Ultimately, Tyra’s job is a lot tougher than mine. My job was the flashy, easy one, but she was the one who carried me,” he admitted.
Black/Ignatowich will face off against Parenteau/Alshon on Semifinal Saturday in what will (and should) be one of the most highly anticipated bouts of the weekend.
4:50pm MDT: Todd, Bar battle past Tuionetoa, Staksrud to make semifinals
The first-time partnership of Parris Todd/Dekel Bar surged into the mixed doubles semifinals with an 11-9, 11-9 victory over No. 3 seeds Etta Tuionetoa/Federico Staksrud.
Todd’s craftiness and consistency on the right and Bar’s length and aggression on the left proved to be a winning combination, as the No. 6 seeds closed out the contest in straight games at the sixth time of asking.
Todd and Bar’s day ended with a win, but it nearly began with a loss.
The tandem faced a match point in their opening contest against No. 37 seeds Mya Bui/Eric Oncins, though they eventually earned a three-game triumph.
“Eric and Mya played a great match, and the fact that we were able to save match points and now be in the semifinals is pretty surreal for us,” Todd mentioned.
Todd is having a particularly successful run in St. George, so far. With Thursday’s win, she’s now into the semifinals in both women’s singles and mixed doubles.
“I was a little bit nervous when we came and it was so windy and dry,” she admitted. “The ball is just flying, so I guess I like the dry conditions. The altitude seems to be working in my favor, so I’m just happy to be playing out here playing alongside Dekel and playing with Rachel [Rohrabacher] tomorrow.”
Top seeds Jorja Johnson/JW Johnson await Todd/Bar on Semifinal Saturday.
3:25pm MDT: Mixed doubles quarterfinals set
Here are the four quarterfinal matchups in mixed doubles:
- No. 1 Jorja Johnson/JW Johnson v. No. 7 Lea Jansen/Riley Newman
- No. 3 Etta Tuionetoa/Federico Staksrud v. No. 6 Parris Todd/Dekel Bar
- No. 2 Catherine Parenteau/Christian Alshon v. No. 8 Meghan Dizon/Andrei Daescu
- No. 4 Tyra Black/James Ignatowich v. No. 5 Rachel Rohrabacher/Hayden Patriquin
3:20pm MDT: Rohrabacher, Patriquin overcome slow start to move past Rane, Garnett
Rachel Rohrabacher/Hayden Patriquin closed out Round of 16 action in mixed doubles with a 6-11, 11-3, 11-2 victory over No. 18 seeds Milan Rane/Connor Garnett.
The No. 5 seeds started off slowly and had trouble dealing with the off-the-bounce speedups of Rane/Garnett in kitchen rallies, but they effectively put Game 1 behind them and took the final two games comfortably to reach the quarterfinals.

They will face No. 4 seeds Tyra Black/James Ignatowich with a spot in the semifinals on the line.
1:50pm MDT: Jansen and Newman, Johnson siblings set rematch of Texas epic
For the second tournament in a row, the pairings of Lea Jansen/Riley Newman and Jorja Johnson/JW Johnson will face off in the mixed doubles quarterfinals.
Both teams advanced to the final 8 with straight-game victories Thursday afternoon,
Jansen/Newman did so with an 11-5, 11-3 victory over No. 11 seeds Alix Truong/Quang Duong (who they fell to last month in Tucson), while the Johnson siblings dispatched No. 14 seeds Lucy Kovalova/Matt Wright by an 11-2, 11-7 score line.
The pairings' battle in the Lone Star State was one of the best matches of the tournament, with the Johnsons coming away with a 5-11, 11-1, 14-12 triumph after saving three match points.
We'll see if Jansen/Newman can avenge that loss this week in St. George.

Milan Rane/Connor Garnett advanced to the Round of 16 in mixed doubles with a 5-11, 11-4, 12-10 victory over No. 12 seeds Callie Smith/Jay Devilliers.
The No. 18 seeds faced a 5-8 deficit in the deciding game, but they fought back and eventually closed out the contest at the third time of asking to make the last 16 for the second tournament in a row.
Rane was especially impressive down the stretch, showcasing her ability to extend points and reset overheads from her opponents.
She and Garnett will next face No. 5 seeds Rachel Rohrabacher/Hayden Patriquin with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.
12:00pm MDT: Todd, Bar overcome slow start to defeat Bui, Oncins
Parris Todd/Dekel Bar survived an upset bid from No. 37 seeds Mya Bui/Eric Oncins, coming away with a 5-11, 13-11, 11-4 victory.
Things looked especially bleak for the No. 6 seeds when they trailed 2-6 in the second game, but they clawed their way back into it—saving a match point along the way—and forced a decider.
From there, they comfortably took Game 3 over the the Miami Pickleball Club teammates to advance to the Round of 16.

They will face No. 9 seeds Vivienne David/Dylan Frazier next with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.
10:40am MDT: Qualifiers Campbell, Morris defeat Gecheva, Fought in three games
Cailyn Campbell/Jace Morris are into the mixed doubles Round of 32 after a 1-11, 11-7, 11-3 victory over No. 23 seeds Christa Gecheva/Todd Fought.

Campbell is coming off a quarterfinal run in singles where she beat reigning champion Mary Brascia, and it certainly looks like she's carried the momentum from that victory with her to Thursday.
The No. 44 seeds will next face No. 9 seeds Vivienne David/Dylan Frazier with a spot in the Round of 16 on the line.
