4:25pm: Bright, Rohrabacher outlast Buckner, Wang in wild Game 3
Anna Bright and Rachel Rohrabacher are into the women’s doubles semifinals after an 11-3, 2-11, 13-11 victory over No. 10 seeds Brooke Buckner and Chao Yi Wang in what could go down as the match of the tournament.
With the teams tied at 6-6 in Game 3, the No. 2 seeds took control and grabbed a 10-6 lead to put themselves within one point of the win.
Five match point saves later, though, Buckner and Wang evened the score at 10-10 and even had a match point of their own at 11-10.
But Bright and Rohrabacher didn’t back down, scoring the next three points to narrowly escape with the win.
They will face either No. 4 seeds Tina Pisnik and Lea Jansen or No. 7 seeds Jorja Johnson and Vivian Glozman in the semifinals.
3:50pm: Castillo, Radzikowska into first semifinal together
Judit Castillo and Ewa Radzikowska defeated No. 8 seeds Simone Jardim and Allyce Jones 11-7, 11-5 to book their spots in the women's doubles semifinals.
It's been quite the day for the No. 14 seeds. They beat No. 3 seeds Lacy Schneemann and Jade Kawamoto—the silver medalists from Kansas City—11-9, 11-6 before their latest triumph.
Castillo and Radzikowska will next take on No. 1 seeds Anna Leigh Waters and Catherine Parenteau as they pursue their first PPA doubles medals.
3:10pm: Johns bros rally to down Staksrud, Tardio in three games
Ben and Collin Johns are into the semifinals after a 9-11, 11-8, 11-7 triumph over No. 5 seeds Federico Staksrud and Gabriel Tardio.
The No. 2 seeds earned some revenge after falling to this same team last week in Kansas City in their first meeting.
There were a few moments where it looked like the South American duo would make it two in a row, as they had leads of 8-5 in Game 2 and 5-1 in Game 3.
But the brothers—who are looking for their first title together since April’s LA Open—proved to be too solid down the stretch, relying on well-timed counters and good decision-making to advance.
“I think it was about staying resilient and steady,” explained B. Johns. “When we were down, it was most important to just make the drops and get to a neutral position, and then good things usually happen from there.”
The Johns brothers will face the new pairing of James Ignatowich and Andrei Daescu in the semifinals.
1:45pm: Jones, Jardim book spots in quarters
Simone Jardim and Allyce Jones defeated No. 22 seeds Sarah Ansboury and Regina Goldberg 11-4, 11-3 in the Round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals.
This is Jardim’s first PPA event since November, and the 45-year-old appreciates every chance she has to compete.
“There are days when I wake up and feel like I’m hanging out with a bunch of 22-year-olds and I feel good, and then there are days when I wake up and feel my age,” she explained. “That’s when the reality kicks in and I realize that I’m not 22 anymore. So I’m just taking it one day at a time and remembering to be thankful to still be playing. I love this game. I love everything about it. I love what it has brought to my life and to the lives of the people around me. It fulfills me, and that’s all that matters.”
Jardim is in pursuit of her 37th PPA medal. She and Jones will next take on No. 14 seeds Judit Castillo and Ewa Radzikowska with a spot in the semifinals on the line.
1:00pm: Scarpa, Dow earn straight-games victory over McGuffin, Martinez Vich
Anderson Scarpa and Greg Dow took the final quarterfinal spot with an 11-2, 11-4 victory over Tyson McGuffin and Jaume Martinez Vich.
This is Scarpa’s second upset victory of the tournament, after he and Cass Hoag took down Lacy Schneemann and Hunter Johnson on Friday in the first round of mixed doubles.
Scarpa and Dow have three pro medals together, all on the APP Tour.
To get closer to adding to that total this weekend in Bristol, they’ll have to defeat No. 8 seeds Quang Duong and Christian Alshon in the next round.
12:45pm: Ignatowich, Daescu outlast Loong, Khlif in three games
James Ignatowich and Andrei Daescu are into the quarterfinals after a 10-12, 12-10, 11-6 triumph over No. 11 seeds Tyler Loong and Noe Khlif.
The No. 7 seeds had to survive two match points at 9-10 in the second game, but they rallied to force a decider and didn’t look back from there.
This is the first time that Ignatowich and Daescu are playing together in a tournament.
One of the interesting dynamics of their partnership is that they both usually play the left side with other partners, so figuring out who would take the right was crucial. They seemed to have the most success with Daescu playing the left and Ignatowich on the right, where he used to be when he and Tyson McGuffin played together in 2023.
They will take on No. 4 seeds Dekel Bar and Hayden Patriquin in the quarterfinals.
11:05am: Loyd, Fought upset top seeds
Michael Loyd and Todd Fought pulled off what might go down as the upset of the tournament, taking down No. 1 seeds Dylan Frazier and JW Johnson 11-6, 1-11, 11-9.
Despite trailing 5-8 in Game 3, the No. 16 seeds showed impressive resolve and fearlessly attacked their opponents out of the air when they had opportunities to.
"Todd's a guy that I saw play at the beginning of the year, and I knew I definitely wanted to try and get him on my schedule," Loyd shared. "He played really well on the right to set us up, and we were able to capitalize in the big moments."
They will next face either No. 6 seeds Jay Devilliers and Pablo Tellez or No. 18 seeds Jack Sock and Collin Shick with a spot in the semifinals on the line.
